Contractors Recognized Propositions 2015

The San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) has selected three recipients for its fourth annual Contractor Recognition Program, honoring businesses for exemplary performance on Propositions S and N projects. Award recipients exemplify adherence to the district's design, building, and safety standards, assure on-time delivery within budget, and compliance with all regulatory requirements.

"Today, the San Diego Community College District is awarding design, engineering, and construction firms who showed exemplary performance on Propositions S and N projects. These firms also share and demonstrate the district's commitment to diversity in contracting and employment," said San Diego Community College District Chancellor Constance M. Carroll.

The awards recognize the accomplishments of subcontractors in construction and professional services for the period of January 1 through December 31, 2014. They were presented to businesses in the following categories:

Recognition Award for Exemplary Performance by a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise in Construction
K & Z Cabinet Company Inc. was established in 1964 by two German immigrants and is currently one of Southern California's major casework manufacturing companies. The firm's founders embraced "old world" principles that included quality, craftsmanship, and integrity. The company has completed well over 3,500 projects over the past 44 years, many of which were for world-class medical, commercial, and educational facilities. K & Z Cabinets is a certified Disadvantaged Business Enterprise and was nominated for its work on the San Diego City College Arts & Humanities and Business & Technology project.

The awardee is recognized for excellence in product quality, installation expertise, and for working collaboratively with the project team throughout construction. Carolyn Wraa of RNT Architects states, "The quality of the product produced by K&Z was exemplary. The pride they take in their work is obvious...they were excellent collaborators during the construction process, helping to develop the best approach to achieve a desired outcome."

Recognition Award for Exemplary Performance by a Small Business Enterprise in Professional Services
JE Moore Consulting is a San Diego-based firm specializing in design and construction management. The firm functions as a conduit between the owner, design team, and construction team to assure a collaborative process and successful project delivery. JE Moore Consulting's Principal provided oversight of the San Diego City College Propositions S and N Construction Bond Program projects as the Campus Project Manager. "JE Moore's experience and attention to every detail on projects large or small is impressive," said David Suter of Consolidated Building Systems. "JE Moore efficiently streamlined the construction process to minimize wasted time and effort which delivered savings for the district and a successful project."

JE Moore is recognized for excellence in promoting the cost-effective delivery of construction projects that changed the landscape of City College and prepared it for the future.

Recognition Award for Exemplary Performance by a Large Contractor
Bergelectric, established in 1946, is among the country's top electrical contractors and was selected as the electrical designer/contractor by the successful design-builders for both the San Diego Mesa College Social and Behavioral Sciences Building and the San Diego Miramar College Science Building Renovation. On both district projects, Bergelectric demonstrated professionalism and excellence in their performance. They worked collaboratively with the district, design team, and trade contractors and made safety a priority. The awardee was proactive in addressing issues in the field, and worked with other subcontractors to assure quality and on-time delivery. Jim Bray of Gafcon, remarked, "They have provided excellent timely service in both the design and construction portions of the project. The quality of their installation, field, and office management team work has been exemplary. We know we can count on them and it's been a pleasure working with their firm and team."

All three firms were recognized at the San Diego Community College District Board of Trustees meeting on July 16, 2015.

"We are honoring dedication, excellence, and award-winning service," said San Diego Community College District Vice Chancellor of Facilities Management Christopher Manis. "The SDCCD is proud of these exemplary businesses and their commitment towards creating learning institutions of unprecedented value."
