San Diego City College will host its fourth annual Community Open House Day on Thursday, April 20 beginning at 9 a.m. In addition to classroom visits, displays, exhibits, and performances around the campus, visitors can attend the 12th annual Student Project and Research Symposium from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Held in the AH/BT Upper Plaza, nearly 200 students representing 40 different majors will present their original projects and research through posters, oral presentations, spoken word, video, artistic displays and performances.

Visitors can select from a host of options, including touring the beautiful Seeds at City Urban Farm, helping create a theatre set in a Scene Painting Workshop, participating in biology, chemistry and geography demonstrations, and learning about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).  Visitors can also watch the manufacturing engineering technology students design and build guitars, get hands on in the Machine Technology Shop, and shop at the Fantastique Boutique where everything is less than $10.

For beauty and health, the Cosmetology Department will offer free haircuts, manicures and basic esthetician services, while the Nursing Department will provide free blood pressure and glucose checks. The dance department will be teaching hip hop and salsa.

In the City Art Gallery, visitors will enjoy the Variations and Improvisations exhibit with multiple artists. The Luxe Gallery will showcase student and faculty photography.

From 12:45 – 1:45, the Jazz Ensemble, Jason Hanna and the Bullfighters, will perform in the AH upper plaza.  Visitors can attend an acting class in the Black Box Theatre or watch scenes from the on-stage performance of Chicago, including the opportunity to win Saville Theatre tickets.  At 2:00 p.m., the Knights baseball team takes on Southwest College at Morley Field in Balboa Park.

At 5:30, there will be a special presentation in the Science building Planetarium with professor Dr. Lisa Will, astrophysicist and resident astronomer at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center.

In addition to community visitors, more than 500 San Diego Continuing Education students and area high school students will be on campus to learn about the college’s 200 degrees and certificate programs.

“It is always a great day when we can open our doors for the community to visit our campus, meet with students and faculty, and discover the new face of City College.  For those who have not visited City College recently, the campus transformation over the past few years is amazing,” said City College interim president Denise Whisenhunt.

With $475 million dollars in Proposition S and N funds, the college is moving into the final stage of the largest renovation in its 103-year history. The campus has grown to 60 acres and has added five new classroom buildings, including Arts and Humanities, Business Technology, Science, Math and Social Sciences, and the Career Technology Center.  The full-service Corporate Education Center has a 120-seat lecture hall and 100-seat multipurpose room that provides community and campus space for meetings and conferences.

Campus maps and the complete list of activities will be available at the Welcome Tent at the corner of 16th & C Streets near the Arts and Humanities building.
Parking is free on campus all day with parking structures located on 16th Street and 17th Street between Broadway and C Streets.
