North Island Needs Civilian Aircraft Maintenance

Miramar and City colleges have entered into a new partnership with the U.S. Navy to meet its projected shortage of skilled technicians at North Island Naval Air Station resulting from an aging workforce.

The plan calls for technicians to complete associate degrees in one of three tracks: aviation maintenance technology, machine technology or electronics technology. All students are required to begin with Miramar’s Aviation 100 since the intent is to have all technicians — machine, electronics and aviation — trained to apply their skills in the aviation industry. Those who continue on the aviation track will stay at Miramar College and those who pursue machine or electronics technology will continue at City College. General education courses can be taken wherever convenient for the student, on any campus or online.

North Island hires individuals for the program who earn $11.74 an hour to start for attending classes full time. North Island also pays for participants’ tuition, fees, books. The program’s first students start classes this spring.
