Price Scholars Program

The San Diego Community College District has been named to take over administration of the Price Community Service Scholarship Program, often called just the Price Scholars Program, a fund endowed by Price Charities to help young people go to college while serving their community.

Ultimately the fund will provide approximately 50 students with $5,000 a year each to attend San Diego City College. The goal for 2000 will be to add 25 students to the current base of 25.

Students will be recruited from Crawford, Garfield, Gompers, Hoover, Lincoln, Morse and San Diego high schools. The students must maintain good academic standing at City College in order to continue to receive the monthly grant, and must serve 400 hours of service time each year with an agency in the community. Scholarships are awarded for up to two years if the student maintains good academic standing and complies with the community service requirement.

“By integrating the Price Scholars Program with our Extended Opportunities Program and Services, we can offer these students customized academic and personal support services such as counseling, mentoring, tutoring, financial aid, job training and assessment,” said Larry Brown, vice president for Instruction at City College.

Lou Murillo, president of the Auxiliary and Institutional Advancement, was appointed to the scholarship board, which makes the final decisions on scholarship recipients.

“On behalf of the board of directors for Price Scholarships, I’d like to express our appreciation to the district for taking responsibility for this extremely worthwhile program, said Robert Price, vice chairman of the board. “This partnership will be of great benefit to many deserving students.”
