San Diego Mesa College will host a seminar on Creating a Community in a Diverse College Environment for faculty and staff in the Loft from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9.

The event will focus on practical techniques on developing and strengthening alliances and a sense of community between multicultural groups, with a focus on how to create an environment of trust and a sense of community where similarities and differences are valued, acknowledged, and considered useful.

Participants will be taken through a series of exercises that will help them learn more about others and what each has to offer that is uniquely theirs. In addition, opportunities will be provided for participants to share the stories and life experiences that have shaped and impacted who they have become, as well as their aspirations for the future. Participants will be given tools to aid in building and maintaining alliances interpersonally and cross-culturally; strategies to motivate and retain multicultural groups; techniques on how to listen and respond to intercultural communications; ways to integrate mainstream cultures with new entries into the workplace; techniques on the art of listening & responding; and Nine Healthy Ways To Communicate.

The seminar will be led by Lee Mun Wah, an internationally renowned Chinese American documentary filmmaker, author, poet, Asian folk teller educator, community therapist and master diversity trainer.

Lunch is included with the event. For more information visit the Mesa College website.
