Miramar College Foundation awarded a $75,000 grant

February 15, 2018 | San Diego Community College District

Under-represented students pursuing STEM degrees will get a financial boost in 2018 after the Miramar College Foundation was awarded a $75,000 grant from the Science & Technology Grants Program for the project, Community Outreach Supply Chain Experience to Improve Career Awareness and College Success in San Diego Region Community College Students (SCE Project). The San Diego Foundation awarded grant runs from January 15, 2018 through January 15, 2019.

“As a community college it is our mission to help under-represented students achieve their educational goals,” said Dr. Patricia Hsieh, president of San Diego Miramar College. “We understand that STEM fields are growing and San Diego Miramar College is uniquely positioned to offer several STEM degrees to under-represented students. This grant will allow for many of our students to get a head start in the STEM field while lower their financial burden.”

This grant will support 30, $1,500 scholarships and 10, $3,000 scholarships. These scholarships will be directed to qualified low-income, first-generation college students who are underrepresented in STEM fields. Scholarship funds will support living expenses, books and go directly to the students such that they can efficiently complete their programs and participate in the planed Supply Chain Community Service Experiences.

The College will also be asked to hold information sessions for “hard to identify” under-served students; provide resume building workshops, individual counseling and college application assistance to increase degree completion, university transfer and career readiness; organize workshops to develop career readiness; provide counseling for program transfer and completion; and upon completion, connect students to subsidized internships.

This grant was awarded by The San Diego Foundation and was made possible by the Blasker Rose Miah Fund and the Reuben H. Fleet Foundation Discretionary Fund.
