SDGE awards $20,000 in grants to Miramar's Vets-to-Jets program

San Diego Miramar College has received two grants totaling $20,000 from San Diego Gas & Electric, Co. to continue to fund its successful Vets-2-Jets program. The first grant in the amount of $7,500 was received June 11, 2018. A second grant in the amount of $12,500 was received Dec. 7, 2018.

Since its creation in 2013, the San Diego Miramar College Vets-2-Jets program has continuously provided services and scholarships to hundreds of Veteran students. This past April, 20 veterans were awarded a Vets-2-Jets scholarship in the amount of either $500 or $1,000. The grant money was also used to fund the college’s annual Veterans Day recognition, a welcome back event in September attended by 40 veterans and to support the Student Veterans Organization (SVO). This January, the current funds will be used to support a spring semester orientation for new veteran students.

San Diego Miramar College created the Vets-2-Jets program to remove the financial barriers that negatively impact the academic success of disabled veterans. Through student services, the program is able to assist veterans, who have a 20 percent or greater VA disability rating, with a variety of services such as: text book assistance, laptops for loan, and at times help with utility bills, housing and transportation needs. This year, the program was expanded to offer scholarships.

“On behalf of the faculty, staff and student Veterans at San Diego Miramar College we wish to thank San Diego Gas & Electric for its generous donation for a sixth consecutive year,” said Dr. Patricia Hsieh, president of San Diego Miramar College. “With our close proximity to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, we believe it is our duty to assist the proud men and women who have bravely served this country and are now looking to advance their education. Thanks to these funds provided by SDG&E we can sustain our efforts to support veterans.”

During the 2017-18 academic year, San Diego Miramar College served the needs of 2,555 students who declared as active duty military or veteran.
