Students volunteer in their community

Website helps students find volunteer opportunities

September 8, 2015 | San Diego Community College District

San Diego Community College District students looking for volunteer opportunities can peruse a new District webpage Volunteer Connect, which is filled with volunteering options posted by local organizations and community groups ranging from the United Way to SAY San Diego.

Volunteer Connect evolved from a Board of Trustees discussion about a year ago about volunteer opportunities for students. Lynn Neault, the District’s Vice Chancellor of Student Services, was asked to develop an online resource for students to find volunteer opportunities.

“Our students have a history of giving back to the community, and Volunteer Connect provides them with a valuable tool to further this mission,” Neault said. “Volunteering not only provides students the opportunity to help make a difference in the community, it fosters community engagement and promotes valuable learning experiences.”

All a nonprofit or community organization has to do is complete an online form that is available on the website and submit it for review. The District’s Outreach Office will vet all submissions before posting them on Volunteer Connect.
