District events celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

September 17, 2021 | San Diego Community College District

The San Diego Community College District and San Diego City, Mesa and Miramar Colleges, and the College of Continuing Education will commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month or Chicanx/Latinx Heritage Month, September 17 through October. 

The colleges will honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Latinx communities from around the world with an array of on campus and virtual events that include a lecture on Chicana artist Judy Baca, a career panel focused on the impact of intersectionality and culture in the workplace, and a poetry reading with Howard University Professor and Poet Tony Medina.

"We Made San Diego"
Join us via zoom to hear from longtime San Diegan and San Diego City College alum Maria Garcia, who is a retired school principal, an activist in the Chicano movement since 1968, and an inductee in the San Diego County Women’s Hall of Fame in 2016. Her 400-plus-page book titled “We Made San Diego” is sectioned into seven parts that include biographies of community members, history, the Vietnam war, organizations and people who were the first Latinos in their careers. Maria Garcia will describe the inspiration behind the content of the book and how she hopes that it serves as an educational tool to mentor younger generations. Register here.
