Dr. Carlos O. Cortez
Chancellor of the San Diego Community College District

"The District’s four college presidents and I are deeply troubled about Wednesday’s decision by the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals regarding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

"The court’s action, which declares DACA illegal but allows current recipients to renew their status, is a slap in the face to all of us who have advocated on behalf of our Dreamer students and their right to work and pursue their lives as productive members of our society. To the SDCCD’s DACA students I want you to know that we will continue to fight for your future. This includes working with our Congressional representatives to pass legislation that makes DACA permanent and secures a pathway to citizenship for all Dreamers.

"In the meantime, please know you are valued members of our community and you will always be welcome and safe on our campuses. As we join together this month for Undocumented Student Action Week, October 17-21, let us send a clear message to policymakers and the courts that we stand with our Dreamer students.”
