Miramar College hosting Civil Rights Film Festival

April 21, 2017 | San Diego Community College District

The 2017 Civil Rights Film Festival: Moments of Change will be held at San Diego Miramar College from 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 in the H Building. The event is free and everyone is welcome.

The Miramar College Civil Rights Film Festival made its debut in 2010 as a tribute to students in the United States History Part II (History 110). The purpose of the program was to bring to light the biracial struggle that culminated in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and 1970s and the ensuing social activism that insisted on extending the promise of social justice and the so-called "American Dream" to additional groups long-held in the peripheries of American society.

From its inception, the program was energized by Miramar College students' active interest and involvement. In 2011, the program was expanded to include the plight of Mexican Americans and the United Farm Workers (UFW) in California. This year, supported by the Miramar College Staff Development Committee and the Miramar College Diversity and International Education Committee, the 2017 Civil Rights Film Festival: Moments of Change, continues to address a wider range of civil rights topics including gender inequalities, discrimination, and ethnic and cultural stereotypes and prejudices.
