SDCCD Chancellor's statement on the elimination of DACA

September 5, 2017 | San Diego Community College District

Today was a sad day in America when the Attorney General announced the Presidential decision to eliminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, a program that provides support, especially educational opportunities, for young people who were brought to this country as children.

In the San Diego Community College District, these students are among the best and highest achieving students at City, Mesa, and Miramar Colleges, and Continuing Education. Nationally, many are earning graduate degrees and are already giving back to their communities through services, expertise, and taxes. This country is the only country they know and deporting them would be a horrible injustice. Our District, our Board of Trustees, our Colleges, our faculty and staff, and our student leaders will commit themselves today to provide whatever advocacy they can to Congress, urging our representatives to undo this reprehensible action and restore opportunity to these special young people, the Dreamers, who so richly deserve them.
