San Diego Community College District

The San Diego Community College District – including San Diego City, Mesa, and Miramar colleges and San Diego Continuing Education – will honor Hispanic Heritage Month with an array of activities ranging from films detailing the lives of inspirational Latinos to lectures and poster presentations. All the events are free and open to the public.

Hispanic Heritage month, from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, recognizes the contributions, heritage, and culture of Latinos in the United States. Among the upcoming events at City, Mesa, and Miramar colleges, and Continuing Education are:

Thursday, Sept. 14, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Latinx Heritage Day”

Hermanos Unidos Brothers United and other campus student clubs – including Puente, HUBU, and others – will be on hand to welcome Hispanic Heritage Month with Latinx Heritage Day. Food, music, and information.

“A Class Apart”

This American Experience documentary details how a small-town Texas murder case led to a landmark Supreme Court decision that redefined civil rights for Mexican Americans in the United States.

“Postcards from Mesoamerica: A Hands-On Experience with Ancient Maya Ceramics”

Professor Ryan Mongelluzzo will explain what archaeologists can learn about the ancient Maya from pottery.

“Violeta fue a los cielos” (Violeta Went to Heaven)

Violeta fue a los cielos tells the story of famed Chilean artist, folksinger, songwriter, poet, and political activist Violeta Parra. The film features a number of Parra’s songs, and a discussion will follow the screening.

Jazz Live San Diego will host a show, "Cubana Be - Cubana Bop - Celebrating the Afro-Cuban Music of Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo, at San Diego City College's Saville Theatre from 8 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, October 3. If you are a current Jazz88 member you can reserve up to two free tickets at the Jazz 88.3 Speakeasy.

“Mar Adentro (The Sea Inside)”

Based on the real-life story of the former Spanish sailor Ramon Sampedro, this film details a man’s fight for the legal right to end his life almost 30 years after an accident left him a quadriplegic.

“Anita”

This film details the odyssey of a young woman with Down syndrome who leaves her house and gets lost in a big city after the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center, the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association, in Buenos Aires. With 85 people murdered and hundreds injured, the attack was the deadliest bombing in Argentine history.

“Bajo la Misma Luna” (Under the Same Moon)

This film details a young boy’s journey across the U.S./Mexico border to be reunited with his mother, an undocumented woman working in Los Angeles.

Chicano/Latino Heritage Celebration with Tim Hernandez

A 1948 plane crash in California took the lives of 32 passengers, including 28 Mexican farmworkers being deported by the U.S. government. Tim Hernandez, author of All They Will Call You, creates a narrative that delivers portraits of the individual souls who, despite social status, race, or nationality, shared a common fate on this frigid January morning.

In addition to the preceding events, Mesa College Professor and Gallery Director Alessandra Moctezuma will be in residency at the Oceanside Museum of Art, which is hosting an exhibition in collaboration with the Getty-led Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative, an exploration of Latin American and Latino art. Her presentation, UnDocumenta, will be on exhibit from Sept. 23 through Jan. 28. UnDocumenta references the plight of the undocumented and is concerned with topics related to biculturalism, migration, labor issues, and human rights.
