San Diego Community College District

The San Diego Community College District – including City College, Mesa College, Miramar College, and San Diego Continuing Education – is planning an array of events honoring Women's History Month in March.  

These presentations explore the experiences and impacts of women throughout history, going back to the book of Genesis.

The following events are free and open to the public:

Monday, March 2, from 11:10 a.m. to 12:35 p.m.
"Fleshing the Spirit"

Dr. Irene Lara, associate professor in the Department of Women's Studies at SDSU, will read from her co-edited book, "Fleshing the Spirit: Spirituality and Activism in Chicana, Latina, and Indigenous Women's Lives." This is part of the Fourth Annual Gracia Molina de Pick Feminist Lecture Series.

"No Roosters in the Desert"

A Mesa College Theatre Company production detailing four Hispanic women who pursue the American Dream. Based on interviews of women who crossed the U.S border, "No Roosters in the Desert" returns on March 13, 14 & 15 for showings at the same times.

"Betrayed"
Millions of women and young girls have been taken from rural to urban areas across national borders. This compelling film explores the social and economic forces that drive sex trafficking.

Tuesday, March 10, from 11:10 a.m. to 12:35 p.m.
"1968 & the Making of a Chicana/o or a Chicana/o Feminist, and Does It Apply Today?"

A panel discussion involving retired school principals, counselors and more take part in this event that is part of the Fourth Annual Gracia Molina de Pick Feminist Lecture Series.

Exhibition: "The Other Side of Birth"
An opening reception for this exhibit of artist Helen Redman's series of paintings and drawings on motherhood. The exhibit is scheduled to run through April 14.

"Real Heroes Don't Tell Heroines What to Do"

A lecture led by Professor Lisa Shapiro and Deborah Reed, authors who have previously collaborated on the book, The Chamber and the Cross.

Thursday, March 19, from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m.
"Eve – the First Feminist"

Professor Sondra Frisch will lead an examination of the active and positive role that Eve plays in Genesis, and comparing it to the generally negative image we find in our popular culture. This event also will touch on the history of the text; the impact of translation; and the influence of other legends and myths regarding women.

"Women Victims; Women Survivors"

Panelists from Survivors of Torture, Project Concern, San Diego Youth and Community Services, Center for Community Solutions will speak about sex trafficking and violence against women and girls.
