Chancellor’s Message: Commencements 2018

June 5, 2018 | Constance M. Carroll - Chancellor of the San Diego Community College District

Dear Colleagues and Friends:

Commencement season is the best season of the year. We in the San Diego Community College District view our work as a vocational calling, since we have the honor of helping deserving students transform their lives through the education they receive, and the degrees, the certificates of achievement, and the diplomas they earn at City College, Mesa College, Miramar College, and Continuing Education. We also measure our success as an institution of higher education by some of these factors. For us, the year culminates in the celebration of our students’ success at the four major commencement ceremonies.

Our graduates are quite special, having an average age of 29, coming from all walks of life, representing a rich diversity of ethnicities and cultural heritages, and achieving a variety of goals. The Class of 2018 was one the largest in our District’s history, as follows:

- For the first time in California community college history, bachelor’s degrees were awarded, at Mesa College to 16 students in the field of in Health Information Management.

- 3,833 associate degrees were awarded by the three Colleges.

- 6,918 certificates of achievement in career and technical majors were awarded by the three Colleges and Continuing Education, as well as 115 high school diplomas awarded by Continuing Education in conjunction with the San Diego Unified School District.

A total of 10,882 degrees, certificates, and diplomas were awarded to the Class of 2018, or, by another measure, 10,882 dreams were achieved. As I stated in my commencement remarks, these students have forever transformed their own lives and destinies, as well as the future of their families, and will provide enormous social and economic benefits to the local community and the state. Because most of our students work, reaching these milestones required great effort, unwavering focus, and many sacrifices. It was wonderful to see them walk across the stage to the cheers of their families and friends.

Please take a moment to reflect on the meaning of commencement and enjoy the selected photographs from our four graduation ceremonies.
