The San Diego Miramar College aviation maintenance program received a $25,000.00 grant from the Delta Airlines Foundation to help prepare future aviation professionals. San Diego Miramar College is one of just ten aviation maintenance training schools nationwide to receive a Delta Airlines Foundation grant in 2018.

“Delta and The Delta Air Lines Foundation are committed to investing in the future of aviation professionals in the local communities where we live, work and serve,” said Tad Hutcheson, senior vice president of The Delta Air Lines Foundation. “Knowledge of avionics, electrical systems and composite construction is critical in the aviation industry, and this grant will help better prepare students for their future careers.”

“Funds allocated to the College will be used to strengthen the aviation maintenance program and align the existing program with industry standards through curriculum development and special projects,” said Jesse Lopez, dean of San Diego Miramar College School of Business, Technical Careers and Workforce Initiatives. “The College will also use funds to purchase industry grade supplies and consumables for the Aviation program, with an emphasis on electrical and composite structures.”

In 2017, Delta Airlines selected Miramar College as one of its 38 certified schools that will assist the air carrier in providing qualified aircraft maintenance technicians. Since its initial partnership in 2015, several San Diego Miramar College students have been hired by Delta Airlines to work at the company’s San Diego Lindberg Field operations site.

“This will benefit our students and Delta greatly,” said Lonny Bosselman, aviation program director at Miramar College. “This will provide a guided pathway for our students to gain employment with Delta at just about the same time the air carrier will see a surge in retirements.”

San Diego Miramar College has offered a high quality aviation maintenance technology program to the community for several years. Students can attain an associate degree and/or a certificate of achievement or performance in the following areas of study: airframe, airframe and powerplant, aviation general studies, aviation work skills, pilot studies and powerplant.
