Continuing Ed to host domestic violence awareness training for employees

October 19, 2018 | San Diego Community College District

On Monday, October 22, 2018 San Diego Continuing Education will host a Domestic Violence Awareness Workshop in partnership with Center for Community Solutions (CCS). The event is taking place at the Educational Cultural Complex at 4343 Ocean View Blvd., San Diego.

“A student’s academic success can be tied to the support available to them beyond the classroom. SDCE’s long-term goal is to provide employees with resources and training to increase the quality of instruction and services,” said Carlos O. Turner Cortez, Ph.D., president of SDCE. “By partnering with CCS, we will better connect students with critical services that will strengthen their intellectual and emotional security.”

The Center for Community Solutions operates as the only rape crisis center in the city of San Diego along with a countywide 24-hour bilingual crisis helpline. “The goal of the training is to prepare SDCE administration, faculty and staff on how to respond to sexual violence disclosures using a trauma informed approach,” said Michele Madrid Novak, SDCE’s Acting Dean of Student Affairs. Mental Health Peers will be tabling and handing out resources to students.

SDCE and San Diego City College were awarded from the California Community College Chancellor’s Office Mental Health Services Grant Program in February 2018; enabling an expansion of programs and services geared towards stigma reduction regarding mental health.  “The two-year grant will allow SDCE to continue to build partnerships like CCS to lead every student towards upward mobility,” said Madrid Novak.
