Mesa College celebrates Cultural Unity Week 2018

San Diego Mesa College will be celebrating diversity inclusion during Cultural Unity Week from April 9 to 13, comprised of workshops, lectures and events, including the annual Festival of Colors. Organized by the Committee for Diversity, Action, Inclusion and Equity and The Humanities Institute, the series of events includes an Advocacy Fair, viewings of “Human, The Movie,” lectures on culture, race and ancestry, a “Critical Conversation with our Elders”, Healing Drums, a diversity luncheon, and a Fashions of the World Runway Show.  

“As the Leading College of Equity of Excellence, San Diego Mesa College seeks to build a culture of diverse, equitable and inclusive practices for our students, staff, faculty and the broader community,” said Mesa College President Dr. Pamela Luster.  “We remain as committed as ever to celebrating diversity during Cultural Unity Week.”

The event will also feature a book signing and small group reception with MK ASANTE on Tuesday, April 10 in Humanities and Cultural Studies/G-102. Bestselling author, award-winning filmmaker, hip-hop artist, and professor who CNN calls, “a master storyteller and major creative force”. Asante is the author of the acclaimed memoir Buck, and described by Maya Angelou as, “A story of surviving and thriving with passion, compassion, wit, and style.” Buck is a Washington Post bestseller, Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection, an NAACP Image Award and Alex Award finalist, and winner of the In the Margins Book Award.
