SDCCD offers support for students, employees affected by border closures

November 30, 2018 | San Diego Community College District

Students and Employees,

The San Diego Community College District has many students, faculty, and staff who either live or work in Tijuana, and who may have family living in Mexico. The District is deeply committed to the welfare and success of all of our students and employees and is prepared to make individual accommodations for those impacted by the events that are triggering border closures.

Employees who may be impacted by border closures should inform their supervisors or managers for support.  Supervisors and managers with specific questions regarding providing support to employees should contact Aimee Gallagher in Human Resources at 619-388-6880 for guidance.  In addition, all employees have access to the District’s Employee Assistance Program for personal support at liveandworkwell.com/public.

Faculty are encouraged to work with individual students who are impacted to support their academic success, including offering temporary online options or other accommodations for those who may be detained/delayed at the border and unable to attend class. Faculty should consult with their department chair and/or dean for guidance and exceptions to policy and should also encourage students to follow up with available services, including mental health services, for wellness support. This letter has been sent to all students in the District advising of our support and commitment to their success.

The Board of Trustees and District community are sincerely concerned about the situation at the San Ysidro Port of Entry and are monitoring it very closely. We will keep you informed of any timely and relevant events that may have a direct impact on members of our campus community. For information about border crossings and closures at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, access the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website. The agency also maintains a Twitter account: @CBPSanDiego.

Sincerely,
