Fall semester 2019 begins at San Diego Continuing Education
From Barrio Logan to Miramar, many San Diego residents are returning to school as adults to change careers, to earn high school diplomas, to improve English or to become United States Citizens. 40,000 students are expected to attend classes when San Diego Continuing Education’s fall semester begins, Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019.
The largest provider of noncredit education in California, SDCE offers prospective students 75+ free accelerated career education programs from healthcare to digital media and thousands of free courses including, high school diploma/equivalency, English as a second language (ESL), and citizenship classes.
“Many middle-skills jobs require more than a high school education but less than a four-year college degree,” said SDCE’s President Carlos O. Turner Cortez, Ph.D. “Free career training is one of the best and fastest paths to employment with living wages.”
This fall, SDCE will introduce two new career training programs in cybersecurity and medical terminology. The cybersecurity analyst certificate program aligns with CompTIA CySA+, and applies behavioral analytics to networks and devices to prevent, detect, and combat cyber threats. The medical terminology class provides instruction in basic terms and vocabulary used throughout the healthcare industry and can be completed in 18 weeks.
For scholars who prefer to study remotely, SDCE offers free online classes including, ESL, business, information technology, digital media, medical terminology, and high school diploma/equivalency.
SDCE proudly serves active-duty, military spouses and veterans with pathways to employment and college. Veterans may use their VA education benefits at SDCE when enrolling in any one of five free job training programs including auto technician, auto body and paint technician, service advisor, upholstery, and shielded metal arc welding. Numerous free career training and basic education classes are open-entry/open-exit and accessible at all SDCE campuses.
After certification completion at SDCE, students are ready for entry-level employment or can transition to San Diego City College, San Diego Mesa College or San Diego Miramar College. Various SDCE career training programs permit college credits earned toward an associate degree.
In addition to flexible course offerings, SDCE offers beyond the classroom support to aid students who are facing food insecurity and other basic needs barriers. SDCEats! Food Pantry, which serves 450 students a day with snacks in between classes and SDCE's Farm to Family Fair, which provides the southeastern San Diego community with free fresh produce the first Wednesday of each month.
