San Diego Community College District honors its veterans

The San Diego Community College District – including San Diego City, Mesa, and Miramar colleges, and San Diego Continuing Education – is honoring its military veterans and active-duty service members by opening new veterans centers and holding workshops, barbecues, and more in celebration of Veterans Day throughout November.

Nearly 8,000 active military members, 1,834 veterans, and 2,445 military spouses or dependents were enrolled in the SDCCD during the 2018-19 academic year.

Among the events scheduled in honor of Veterans Day:

Tuesday, November 5

10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Veterans Resource Center Soft Opening
Refreshments will be provided during this event at the Mesa College Veterans Resource Center.

Miramar College Veterans Day Celebration
Live blues and rock by Jerry “Hot Rod” De Mink, patriotic sand sculpture, free barbecue chicken for the first 80 veterans with proof of service, and an abundance of resources.

Scholarship Workshop for Student Veterans

In addition, the City College office of Student Affairs is holding a food drive and blanket drive for veterans throughout the month. Donations can be dropped off at during regular business hours in Room M-200. Mesa College during the week of November 4 will hold a flag dedication fundraiser outside Mesa Commons during which proceeds from $1 flag sales will support student veteran scholarships. Also during the week, students, faculty, and staff will have an opportunity to share sentiments and post photos of loved ones at a veterans appreciation flag in the Mesa College Student Services building.

Veterans Day is Monday, November 11. All campuses and the SDCCD offices will be closed.
