Union accepting applications for 2022 internship

May 12, 2022 | San Diego Community College District

The AFT Guild is interviewing candidates for the fall semester 2022 internship, which will begin in late August.

If you know a college student who might want to learn about labor history and do union and social justice activism, please send them to: Jim Miller, AFT 1931 VP jmiller229@icloud.com no later than Tuesday, May 17, 2022. Please feel free to forward to any students you think might be interested.

The American Federation of Teachers Guild, Local 1931, is in the process of hiring student interns for the 2022-23 school year. Our internship is an intensive introduction to union and social justice work. Beginning in the Fall semester, every intern takes a 3 hour/week Labor Studies course and does a wide range of social justice work through the end of the semester. The internship then continues in the Spring semester for those who want to do a full year. Our Union is involved in union solidarity actions, political campaigns, racial and gender justice work, environmental activism, and more. Interns learn how to organize, phone bank, and craft activist campaigns. While we are primarily focused on SDCCD and GCCCD students, our internship is also open to all San Diego area college students, both full and part time.

More specifically, AFT Guild interns:

  • Attend a weekly meeting at 3 p.m. every Monday in the AFT office in Mission Valley.
  • Enroll in and attend a weekly Labor Studies course on Tuesday evenings from 5:50 to 9 p.m. at San Diego City College.
  • Do four hours of union/political/community work per week in addition to the meeting and class.

The pay for the meeting time and the four hours of weekly activism is $20 an hour and the costs of the Labor Studies course are reimbursed upon successful completion of the course.

All interns who are accepted into the program will need to provide documentation that they are fully vaccinated and boosted and agree to wear a mask during our meetings until this is no longer necessary due to the pandemic.

Please contact AFT 1931 VP Jim Miller, at jmiller229@icloud.com if you are interested in coming in for an interview for one of our internship positions by Tuesday, May 17, 2022.
