Miramar College receives $1.4 million M.E.S.A grant

San Diego Miramar College has received a 5-year M.E.S.A. grant from the state Chancellor’s Office totaling $1.4 million for the creation of a Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement program (MESA).

“The California Community College Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program is designed to help underserved and disproportionately impacted students majoring in the sciences achieve their goals, particularly in transfer-oriented programs,” said Dr. Wesley P. Lundburg, president of San Diego Miramar College. “This is fantastic news, and a testament to our commitment to our students and our community!”

MESA programs are nationally recognized and operate collaboratively within statewide consortia to broaden participation and improve academic outcomes for underrepresented students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education.

MESA USA has a vision where students of color are empowered to achieve their dreams in these fields to create prosperity in our communities. Miramar College will focus on infrastructure, design, and student outcomes, especially as it relates to comprehensive academic and student support. Professional development, internship opportunities, and workforce advisory board collaboration will also be focus throughout the length of the grant.

San Diego Miramar College has been funded for five years for a total of $1,400,000. The funding levels per year are:

  • Year 1 (2022-23) $280,000
  • Year 2 (2023-24) $280,000
  • Year 3 (2024-25) $280,000
  • Year 4 (2025-26) $280,000
  • Year 5 (2026-27) $280,000

To support this initiative, the college will hire a program activity manager position and an administrative assistant.
