Women surfers to discuss journey of breaking down barriers

March 20, 2023 | San Diego Community College District

The San Diego College of Continuing Education is presenting a March 23 panel discussion of women surfers detailing their journey of breaking down barriers while battling misogyny in a male-dominated sport.

Titled “Under the Radar: Lifting Each Other So That We All Rise,” the event is slated for 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the San Diego College of Continuing Education’s West City Campus, 3249 Fordham St., in San Diego’s Midway District. Under the Radar will include a welcome reception and exhibit, in addition to the panel.

Among the panelists are Mikala Kramer, a production manager for Sharp Eye Surfboards; surf instructor Jenn Lacey; surf coach Sabrina Stokes; and former professional women’s surfer Lisa Carulli Ed.D., who also works with the college’s Acquired Brain Injury Program and is a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) coordinator.

“The idea for Under the Radar is to feature a panel of local San Diego female surfers and business owners to delve into the not-so-pretty underside of surfing,  including localism, sexism, racism and homophobia,” said Dr. Carulli “It also examines the evolution of the mindset of women surfers, who for a long time were taught to be pitted against each other, but who have since built a supportive community.”
