The San Diego Community College District’s Board of Trustees Scholarships have once again received funding from the Scott A. and Elizabeth V. Christensen Charitable Foundation for 2022.

For the spring semester scholarships awards, the foundation has increased their donation to each of the district’s four college foundations from $2,000 to $5,000 for a total of $20,000. With this increased support, each of the district’s four colleges can now award five to ten $500 to $1,000 Board of Trustees Scholarships in 2022.

Since the first Board of Trustees Scholarships were awarded in spring 2014, the Christensen Foundation has given a total of $84,000 to help more than 100 SDCCD students continue their education. That support included a $10,000 grant for the purchase of 3D printers at City College and the College of Continuing Education.

“Our entire Board of Trustees is so grateful for the amazing support the Christensen Foundation has provided to our students,”  said Trustee Bernie Rhinerson, who coordinates the relationship with the Foundation. “With this support, our Board has been able to offer these scholarships to exceptional students who are learning valuable job skills needed for productive careers in our local economy.”

This year marks the eighth year the Christensen Foundation has provided funding for the Board of Trustees Scholarships, which have supported students in career technical education programs. The scholarship awards work to support students with vocational and workforce goals and assists students in pursuing job opportunities within the San Diego region.

Scholarships such as these have benefited students from San Diego City, Mesa, Miramar and Continuing Education colleges as the cost of attending college and additional costs, such as room and board, books, supplies, and transportation, continue to be a challenge for students wanting to further their education.

“We sincerely appreciate the Christensen Foundation increasing its support of the district’s students,” said SDCCD Chancellor Carlos O. Turner Cortez. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact of these philanthropic gifts has never been greater.”

The Board of Trustees Scholarships and other student aid programs within the SDCCD help ease financial challenges faced by students and make a difference in their educational journey. Each year, the district and its colleges distribute more than $600,000 in scholarships to deserving students.
