April 21 is deadline to apply for internship at Coastal and Marine Institute

Are you a community college student interested in getting research experience? You have until April 20, 2023 to apply for the Coastal and Marine Institute Laboratory Summer Research Program.

The Coastal and Marine Institute Laboratory (CMIL) is San Diego State University’s marine laboratory located near San Diego International Airport. Research at CMIL spans from kelp forests and seagrass beds to mudflats and rocky shores, with scientists ranging from students — both undergraduates and graduate — to faculty. 

In the past, this internship consisted of undergraduates from San Diego area community colleges. However, this year we are forming mentorship teams that consist of a SDSU graduate student mentor, an SDSU undergraduate, and a community college student. 

When is this internship? 

One day per week, Tuesday, May 30th – Friday, August 18th, 2023

Who should apply? 
  • Community college students in San Diego
  • Students who are interested in degrees or careers in marine science
  • Students who want to learn how to protect marine habitats
Requirements? 
  • Must be enrolled in summer or fall 2023 classes at a San Diego community college
  • No other experience is necessary

What will interns be doing?
  • Interns will be working 8 hours per week from Tuesday, May 30 - Friday, August 18, 2023 with their mentors on graduate student thesis projects.
  • Depending on the type of research the intern prefers, they could be working in the laboratory processing samples, collecting organisms in the field, learning animal husbandry, aiding with data analysis, and more!
  • Attending four career building workshops on Zoom
  • Topics include navigating  the path from undergraduate to graduate school, how to read scientific literature, and how to give scientific presentations.
What are the expectations?
  • Work 8 hours a week from Tuesday, May 30 - Friday, August 18, 2023. interns will work out a schedule that works for them with their mentors. This will allow interns to maintain work, school, and family obligations.
  • Attend four career building workshops via Zoom
  • Write a blog post about their experiences
  • Give a short ~15 minute presentation on their internship at the end of the summer - mentors will help interns develop their presentations
  • What are the compensations? 

Interns will receive a total of $1,664 ($16/h for one 8-h day per week during the 12-week program plus an additional 8 h of online orientation and professional development).
