Benefiting the free tuition program, San Diego Promise, our giving day generated $51,736 in donations from 74 donors. This includes 34 employees who signed up for payroll deductions, which will contribute $12,516 annually to the San Diego Promise. The SDCCD is extremely grateful to our many generous donors and to people who supported the day on social media.
By standing united in "Keeping the Promise," the District and our supporters have sent out the signal of our unwavering commitment to our Promise students.
The San Diego Promise supports students at City, Mesa, and Miramar colleges. It also provides a pathway for College of Continuing Education students to transfer to one of the SDCCD’s credit colleges and attend tuition-free. Charitable contributions to the San Diego Promise supplement public funds, expanding the program to some of the district’s most vulnerable students, such as current and former foster youth, veterans, justice impacted, those supporting families, and others.
The San Diego Promise began as a pilot program supported by private funds in 2016 with an initial cohort of 186 students whose first year came tuition free. Since then, the program has served more than 10,000 students. We have enrolled nearly 3,000 Promise students for the 2023 fall semester. Besides covering the cost of enrollment, the San Diego Promise also provides book grants, counseling, and hands-on support to help students develop an educational pathway leading to their career goals.
