District celebrates Filipinx American History Month

The San Diego Community College District, including San Diego City, Mesa, Miramar, and Continuing Education colleges are celebrating Filipinx American History Month with an array of events throughout the month of October. Events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Friday, October 11

6:30 to 8 p.m.
Film Screening: Searching for Kapwa
Searching for Kapwa is a documentary about the Filipino value of kapwa, which means "shared identity" or "self in others." The film follows filmmaker Larry D. Lariosa as he explores his ancestral roots and the history of the Philippines, including 400 years of colonization.

Asian American and Pacific Islander History Presentation
Professor Michael Yee will present on Filipinos and Asian American Pacific Islanders at the World Expositions. Professor Joel Palheygi will lead a discussion on Filipino Boxer, Pancho Villa Guilledo.

Dr. Amanda Solomon Amorao hosts Closer to Liberation: Pina/x/y Activism in Theory & Practice
Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies professor Dr. Solomon will discuss her recent publication, “Closer to Liberation: Pina/x/y Activism in Theory & Practice”, an anthology that revisits the roots of Pinayism, a form of feminist thought practiced by those who identify as Filipina American or Filipinx American.

Miramar College Professor Judy Patacsil is the national President Emerita of the Filipino American National Heritage Society, which established Filipino American History Month. October was selected to commemorate the first Filipinos who landed in Morro Bay on October 18, 1587. Filipino American History Month was first recognized statewide in 2006, and nationally via a 2009 Congressional resolution.
