All San Diego County high school students and community college students, including
those who attend San Diego City, Mesa, Miramar, or Continuing Education colleges,
seeking transfer to a four-year university are encouraged to attend and learn more
about scholarships, participate in workshops, and be eligible for prize giveaways.
The day will feature games, food, music, and representatives providing information
about transfer requirements and support services like financial aid and counseling.
Students are encouraged to bring copies of their unofficial transcripts for on-the-spot
admissions opportunities.
“The San Diego Community College District is deeply committed to creating pathways
of opportunity and access for our diverse student body. This CCC to HBCU Transfer
Caravan event is a perfect reflection of that commitment,” said Ashanti T. Hands,
president of Mesa College. “HBCUs offer a rich history of academic excellence and
culturally affirming and nurturing environments that can be a transformative next
step for our students. We strongly encourage students to explore the unique opportunities
that HBCUs from across the country offer, as they consider their next steps in higher
education.”

Register For The HBCU Caravan at Mesa College
The caravan is expected to draw 300 attendees from across San Diego County. The CCCCO offers any California community college student with a GPA of 2.0 or higher, and also meet completion requirements, guaranteed admission to all partner HBCU institutions. Select HBCUs offer in-state tuition to California transfers. Learn more about transferring to an HBCU.
HBCUs have no impacted majors and offer small class sizes that are taught by professors, not graduate students. According to The Network Journal, of those African Americans who are judges in the United States, 80% of them graduated from an HBCU, and so did 50% of Black lawyers. Additionally, nearly a quarter of all African American bachelor’s degree holders in the U.S. attended an HBCU.
The CCC to HBCU Caravan event follows on the heels of Mesa College’s annual Transfer Day, hosted by the college’s Transfer Center, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on October 10, which will feature representatives from all nine University of California locations, as well as most of the 23 California State Universities and a variety of Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities schools.
