The San Diego Community College District, including San Diego City, Mesa, Miramar, and Continuing Education colleges are celebrating Native American Heritage Month with an array of events throughout the month of November. Events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Monday, November 4

12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Kumeyaay Flag Raising and Land Acknowledgement Ceremony
Bobby Wallace, a member of the Barona Band of Mission Indians will present on Kumeyaay history. The Viejas Blue Eagle Bird Singers will perform songs and cultural traditions from the Kumeyaay peoples.

Indigenous Student Alliance Film Screening: "Trail of Tears"
The Indigenous Student Alliance will be holding a screening of the documentary "Trail of Tears: Cherokee Legacy," which was funded by the Cherokee Nation and Eastern Band Cherokee Indians to tell the story of their removal and their perseverance today.

Monica Zavala: An Indigenous Educational and Artistic Journey
Monica Zavala from the Gabrielino/Tongva Nation will describe her journey in higher education, development as a visual artist, and how her Indigenous identity has shaped her life and career.

Weaving: Engaging Community Through the Power of 2Spirit, Indigenous-Queer Stories Participants will be guided through a community storytelling circle facilitated by Juan A. Reynoso, a local 2S Kumeyaay Educator of the Queer SOL Collective. Participants will draw connections to Indigenous, Queer, and LGBTQIA+ intersectionality.

The Equity Librarian and the Indigenous Students Alliance Club will present the Mesa College Library Native American Heritage Month Resource Guide as well as recognize the achievements and central role of Native Americans in U.S. history.

Native American Heritage Month Resource Fair
A celebration of indigenous cultures, traditions, and contributions. Indigenous guest speakers and performers start promptly at 11 a.m.

Mesa College will host the "Native American Athletes Through Time" display now through November 30th to feature Native American athletes during the 20th and 21st centuries and to honor the importance of athletics to Native American cultures. The display is located on the 3rd floor of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Building (SB).
