“This Center is more than just a space. It is a symbol of our ongoing commitment to representation and student success,” said San Diego City College President Ricky Shabazz. “We are proud to celebrate our AANHPI community and to ensure that every student feels welcomed, supported, and empowered to thrive.”
The celebration featured a ribbon cutting ceremony, cultural performances, music, food, and even a round of karaoke that energized the crowd. Students, faculty, classified professionals, and community members gathered to welcome the Center and celebrate the rich diversity of AANHPI communities. The first 100 students to register received a free t-shirt, adding to the festive atmosphere.
“This space was created to honor, reflect, support, and center the stories, histories, customs, traditions, and values of our Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students,” said Joshua M. Lindo, AANHPI Student Success Coordinator. “It will serve as a place where all students can connect, grow, and feel supported in their academic and personal journeys.”
The AANHPI Connections Center joins San Diego City College’s growing network of identity-based support spaces and reinforces the college’s mission of advancing equity, accessibility, and social justice. The Center is a dedicated space where all students can access resources that support their academic success and personal growth while helping them feel supported and connected on campus. It offers academic support, mental health counseling, career readiness programs, and cultural events, as well as a safe and inclusive space to study, relax, and connect through student-led activities, workshops, and peer support.
