District events celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

The San Diego Community College District and its four colleges: San Diego City, Mesa, Miramar, and Continuing Education, will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a series of events from September 15 through October 31. The programs will highlight the rich cultures, contributions, and lived experiences of Hispanic and Latinx communities. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

National Immigrant Day Professional Panel
A panel of speakers, composed of Velma Calvario, a Nahua indigenous community member and educator, Marta Rodriguez, a member of the Kumeyaay Nation and cultural promoter, and Dr. Gabriela Kovats Sánchez, a Chicana Scholar on racial and ethnic identity formation, will discuss indigenous identities as experienced on both sides of the Mexico-U.S. border and those crossed by it.

On Display through October 10

City College will also highlight Hispanic Heritage Month and Undocumented Student Success Week with two special book displays. From September 15 to October 10, a Latinx Heritage Book Display will be available on the library’s main floor from 5 to 6:45 p.m., showcasing stories from undocumented communities worldwide. From October 13 to 31, an Undocumented Student Success Week Book Display will be presented in MS-162 from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
