Into the Woods is directed by drama professor and Co-Chair of the Visual and Performing Arts Department Dr. Katie Rodda. Music direction is by Richard Dueñez Morrison, and choreography is by Kristin Arcidiacono.
One of Sondheim’s most enduring musicals, Into the Woods takes everyone’s favorite storybook characters and brings them together for a timeless, yet relevant and haunting piece. Originally produced at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre, Into the Woods is the winner of three 1988 Tony Awards. The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone’s wish is eventually granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.
This is the first time San Diego City College has produced a Sondheim musical, and the artistic team is excited to bring this show to the campus and larger communities. “It is one of the most glorious scores in the musical theatre canon,” says Rodda, “with soaring melodies, complex harmonies, and some of the wittiest and most memorable lyrics to ever be performed on a stage.” The cast has been working long hours preparing for this production, finding joy in the challenging music and the complexity of the story.
