SDCCD Trustees Geysil Arroyo (President), Craig Milgrim, Maria Nieto Senour, Mariah Jameson, Marichu G. Magaña, Student Trustee Ariella O'Garro, and Chancellor Gregory Smith, and SDUSD Board of Education Members Richard Barrera (President), Sabrina Bazzo (Vice President), Cody Petterson, Shana Hazan, Sharon Whitehurst-Payne, Student Board members Alina Nguyen and Ashley Ordaz, and Superintendent Fabi Bagula were in attendance. Following welcome remarks from the President of San Diego City College Ricky Shabazz, SDCCD Chancellor Gregory Smith, and SDUSD Superintendent Fabi Bagula, the boards began the public meeting, which was conducted in the form of a presentation followed by a discussion.
Below are highlights from each section of the presentation. The following topics were presented by SDCCD Vice Chancellor Susan Topham; Outreach Coordinators Andrea Gastelum and Chantal Hernandez; Acting Outreach Coordinator Saribel Morales-Riversa; and Research and Planning Analyst Stephen Bass; as well as SDUSD Instructional Support Officer Jennifer Roberson; Head Counselor, Ethnic Studies Liaison, College and Career Access Pathways (CCAP)Coordinator Anna Vasquez; and student Sadie Wheeler.
- Update on joint 3-Year Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timebound (SMART) Student Outcome Goals: The presentation began with an overview of the Joint 3-Year S.M.A.R.T. Student Outcome Goals, including insights about interim outputs to guide progress while keeping student outcomes in mind. Presenters noted that these goals guided progress made over the past year since the spring 2025 Joint Board meeting held on March 18. These goals were initially developed and discussed during the 2024 Joint Board and later approved by the SDUSD and SDCCD boards.
- Student Experiences: SDUSD student Sadie Wheeler shared experiences with early college credit opportunities in the College and Career Access Pathways (CCAP), primarily through the Fast Track at San Diego Mesa College. She discussed how these programs and classes empowered her to gain confidence in mathematics and to pursue higher education and further early college credit opportunities.
- Workforce Preparation: SDCCE Outreach Coordinator Andrea Gastelum discussed efforts to inform students about all the opportunities available through Work-Based Learning Pathways. Emphasis was placed on sharing information about the benefits of early college experiences, including programs like Workforce Wednesday (Lincoln High School) and Trade Tuesday (Morse High School). Students had the chance to connect with outreach staff and faculty members from the college programs.
- Update on Early College Credit and San Diego Promise: SDCCD Research and Planning Analyst Stephen Bass presented enrollment, outcome, and disproportionate impact data for SDUSD high school students taking college classes at SDCCD. This data was used to monitor the districts' progress toward goals for equitable expansion of dual and concurrent enrollment and to support high school students in completing college credits. Data was also shared on post-high school enrollment to SDCCD colleges, including updates on San Diego Promise enrollment and LGBTQIA+ data from the San Diego Promise program's general cohort.
- Update on Student Focus Groups: SDCCD Outreach Coordinator Chantal Hernandez discussed efforts to host CCAP Focus Groups and how feedback from students and community partners influenced their engagement with the community through programs, resources, and services. Resources were allocated to implement initiatives stemming from student and partner feedback.
- Goal Highlights: SDCCD Acting Outreach Coordinator Saribel Morales-Riversa and Head Counselor, Ethnic Studies Liaison, and CCAP Coordinator Anna Vasquez presented on efforts to increase Financial Aid completion at Crawford High School. Efforts were made to provide consistent support and on-site resources for Crawford High School students to assist with financial aid completion and enrollment, including participation in the San Diego Promise program. They also discussed the collaboration on hosting programs to engage students and partners at San Diego City College.
- Update on Legislation and Advocacy: Chancellor Gregory Smith and Superintendent Fabi Bagula read a joint statement affirming their commitment to continued collaboration in advocating for policies and resources that benefit the students the districts mutually serve.
