About our Presenter:
BrianBrian Weston started working in California Community College’s as an American Sign Language Interpreter and progressed into Information Technology and Teaching. Brian serves as the Dean of Online & Distributed Learning at San Diego Community College District. He leads the Districtwide Distance Education Steering Committee, Educational Services Software Workgroup, and Student Textbook Affordability Committee for the district. His focus is enhancing online programs and course offerings while ensuring that students have access to necessary college services.






Title: Keynote Address

Description:
Empowering Faculty and Students through Digital Literacy: Lowering Barriers to Success- This talk will focus on the transformative impact of integrating digital literacy into the curriculum. It will highlight how bringing digital literacy, digital creativity, and digital learning into our classrooms can lower barriers to student success by empowering both faculty and students in new ways, by helping to bridge the digital divide, by opening greater access to course content and practices, and by providing new avenues for engagement. It will feature example approaches and inspiring student project and provide a few entry points and (re)orientations: from low-stakes in-class activities to embracing failure pedagogy to innovative course (re)design.

About our Presenter:
An image of the keynote speaker Justin HodgsonJustin Hodgson, Ph.D., is an award-winning educator and digital transformation leader at Indiana University, where he Co-Directs the system-wide Digital Gardener Initiative, a series of programs focused on faculty development and student success designed to integrate digital literacy, digital creativity, and digital learning into the classroom. Dr. Hodgson also directs the Online First-Year Composition program at IU Bloomington and is the founding editor of the Journal for Undergraduate Multimedia Projects. His research focuses on the intersections of rhetoric and writing studies, emerging media, digital learning, play and game theory, and art and aesthetics. 



Title: Building Better Learning Experiences: An Active Learning + Digital Literacy Approach

Time: 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Description:
This workshop is design to help faculty move beyond just mapping learning outcomes into a course or syllabus and instead to see themselves as learning experience designers (and to see the classroom as a learning experience design space). To help in this process, the workshop will ground participants in basic concepts for integrating both Active Learning practices and Digital Literacy approaches into the classroom, showcase examples and discuss possible considerations, and then invite participants to redesign one class experience in a way that leverages some of the practices and concepts introduced in the workshop. This will be a hands-on (virtual) workshop and invite participants into collaborative engagements as part of the experience.

Title: Creative Commons

Description:
Shanna Hollich, the learning and training manager at the San Diego Community College District, emphasized the importance of open access to knowledge and culture for everyone in the public interest. She highlighted the role of Creative Commons in empowering educators and facilitating collaboration through shared knowledge. Shanna also discussed the impact of the pandemic on the need for global scientific collaboration and the role of open access content in addressing such challenges. She clarified the definition of an Open Educational Resource (OER) and explained the advantages of CC licensing over traditional copyright. Shanna also discussed the complexities of fair use and fair dealing in copyright laws and provided best practices for attribution in relation to Creative Commons (CC) licenses.

About our Presenter:

An image of SDCCD Instructional Design Supervisor Liesl BoswellLiesl Boswell, M.Ed. in Learning Design & Technology, focuses on designing and developing effective “just-in-time” online self-paced instructional design and accessibility resources for staff and faculty. With an extensive background in partnering with faculty in instructional design and accessibility, spanning back to 2013, Liesl has led online teaching efforts for the California Community Colleges (CCC) through statewide initiatives such as the CVC-Online Education Initiative and CCC Accessibility Center.

Currently serving as the Instructional Designer Supervisor at the San Diego Community College District, Liesl remains dedicated to her mission of fostering equitable educational experiences. Her goal is to provide a robust faculty support infrastructure throughout the district that empowers educators to excel in online and innovative teaching. 

Tuesday October 10th

Title: Building Formative Assessment into your Content Pages

Time: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Description:
Kelly Spoon discussed the importance of incorporating formative assessments into course design to guide students' learning. She highlighted the difference between formative and summative assessments and the benefits of providing ongoing feedback to students. She also emphasized the need for accessibility in resources and discussed the potential limitations of students skipping content and moving directly to answers. She shared resources for creating interactive learning materials and emphasized the importance of student readiness in assessments. Furthermore, she discussed upcoming events and resources for improving teaching techniques, including a Canvas Quizzes 101 session and archived webinars on H.5 P. Wendy and Kelly also discussed their experiences with managing and grading coursework in asynchronous and synchronous courses, respectively.

Michelle Fischthal serves as the Vice Chancellor of Institutional Innovation and Effectiveness at the San Diego Community College District, where she leads critical functions such as district-wide strategic planning, institutional effectiveness and research, accreditation coordination, and the administration of educational and emerging technology initiatives. Her role also extends to overseeing the collaborative efforts of the district's Institutional Effectiveness and Research Departments within the colleges, ensuring effective training, research protocols, and support for significant projects. Michelle's commitment to excellence is evident in her responsibility for annual accountability reporting, enrollment management, and the development of a culture of evidence within the district. She actively maintains comprehensive research and innovation resources. Michelle Fischthal is a visionary leader dedicated to advancing SDCCD’s mission through innovative approaches and collaboration.

Wednesday October 11th

Title: LibreText's Adapt and Studio 

Time: 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM

Description:
Introduce educators to LibreTexts ADAPT open homework and assessment platform, as well as our H5P creation platform, Studio. Currently sponsored by the California Education Learning Lab (CELL), both platforms are free for all California instructors and students for the next four years. During these workshops LibreTexts Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Delmar Larsen, will demonstrate how instructors can use ADAPT to augment existing and newly constructed OER textbooks with summative exercises and embed them in LMSs, LibreTexts textbooks, in a standalone application, and in-class clickers. Discussions will demonstrate how the ADAPT homework system empowers faculty to build and use existing questions in multiple modalities. Participants will learn how to build autograded questions based on four technologies – H5P, WebWork, IMathAS, and native (QTI) – that can be used interchangeably to allow for maximal impact.

Delmar will also introduce the Studio platform for construction, storage and distribution of H5P assessments. Participants will be able to join Studio to create and share H5P assessments, review the H5P of other authors, and build/join a community within Studio.

About our Presenter:
An image of Dr. Delmar LarsenDr. Delmar Larsen is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and the Biophysics Graduate Group in the University of California, Davis. Delmar’s current research interests extend across many scientific disciplines including biophysics, physical chemistry, molecular biology, and computational modeling, with a common thread of investigating and characterizing of rapid condensed phase dynamics. Delmar is the Founder and Director of the ever expanding LibreTexts project which now includes a curatatory which hosts over 600,000 pages of openly licensed content that can be easily adapted or adopted into OER for courses spanning all disciplines; the project also hosts a corresponding project management site, open homework and assessment platform, interactive H5P studio, and much, much more. 


Title: Accessibility and the Canvas Mobile App

Description:
In this workshop, Mesa Web Development Professor Kris Secor will take you on a tour of Canvas’ mobile application from both the instructor and the student perspective. Older devices and emulators will be used to demonstrate the student experience. Recommendations will be made to cater to those older devices as a progressive enhancement approach will be introduced.

About our Presenter:
An image of Dr. Stefanie Johnson ShipmanDr. Stefanie Johnson Shipman is a Professor of English and ELAC (English Language Acquisition) at San Diego Miramar College. She has been teaching online since 2016 and loves it! In particular, Stefanie appreciates the one-on-one connections she can make with online students while supporting them in their writing, reading, and research goals, including students who may not have been traditionally served in the face-to-face environment, such as working students and students who are parents. She also loves the community of the online classroom, including student-to-student connections. Stefanie currently serves as Miramar's Online Faculty Mentor and Assistant Chair of the Languages and Ethnic Studies Department. Stefanie is a proud mom of twins, and she loves spending time with her family, reading, and running.

Stephanie Gates will introduce PlayPosit, a tool that adds interactivity to videos, providing more engagement and accountability in the learning process. She will explain how PlayPosit works, highlighting its flexibility in usage, including for skills practice and repurposing existing video lectures. Stephanie also detailed how to add a PlayPosit activity to Canvas, and the options for controlling and grading participation points.

An image of AVC Peter MaharajDr. Maharaj has more than two decades of information technology and business-related experience and has a strong background in project management, business development, data center management, telecommunications, and process improvement. Dr. Maharaj has a bachelor of science degree in business administration, information systems, from California State University Long Beach; a master of science degree in educational/instructional technology and information systems from National University; a master of business administration from UC Irvine; and a doctor of education in organizational change, leadership, and innovation from the University of Southern California. His Dissertation, Leadership in an Age of Technology Disruption, was based upon qualitative, single-case research demonstrating the value of effectively adopting and managing technology to support student success.
