Time: Monday 4/19 from 1 PM - 2 PM

Topic: Pedagogy - Authentic and Adaptable Assessments

Description: How can we design assignments that accurately assess learning and are flexible in times of emergency? Adaptable assessment design accomplishes this by allowing student to demonstrate learning utilizing their strengths. This separation of assessment of content from assignment structure lowers external barriers, minimizes confounding variables, and is particularly important for marginalized students. Adaptable assessments also provide flexibility in times of crisis because they are focused directly on learning outcomes and can, therefore, take different forms based on the current circumstances. This session demonstrate how adaptable assessment design can be used to design effective and engaging learning activities and assessments.

Topic: Technology Tools - Artificial Intelligence to help students improve their speaking skills

Description: Glossophobia- the belief that something negative is going to happen or being judged can absolutely paralyze a person in front of an audience. Most think this fear only exists when giving speeches but this fear of speaking can be seen in interviews, in classrooms, and even in large group settings. Often this fear, which is manifested in the brain, is easily overcome with proper training and practice. Imagine, building your perception of your speaking skills with artificial intelligence. Pops Classroom, a simple online platform, allows you to upload your recorded speech and instantly receive feedback on your presentation skills along with resources to help you improve.  Help your students calm their fears, build their speaking skills, and gain the confidence needed to become a polished speaker.

Speaker: Suzanne David (CSUN)

Meeting Type: Prescheduled Live

Time: Wednesday 4/21 from 2 PM - 3 PM

Topic: Pedagogy - Increase Engagement in Zoom

Description: As more instructors take their classes online, the most common practices are to either imitate a classroom lecture or use the session as office hours. The former option, while being a format that permits transfer of knowledge, tends to be lacking in interaction and engagement. The latter approach tends to be unstructured, and students may stop attending unless they have specific questions, which is a lost opportunity for all. Rather than trying to imitate the practices of face-to-face instruction, this webinar provides tips and examples for ways to engage students throughout the synchronous classroom session, using such techniques as problem-solving,  group discussion, role playing, polling, and ice breakers. The recommendations leverage the interaction tools provided in the Zoom meeting platform, rather than requiring outside, third-party tools.
