Chancellor's Cabinet Report 08-25-26

Prior Week’s Key Accomplishments:

City College:

1. Saville Theatre Replacement: Fault line excavation was completed on Aug. 18.

2. Fire Alarm & Intrusion Alarm Components Replacement: This project includes multiple buildings throughout the campus. The Division of the State Architect (DSA) submittal for the Health, Exercise Science, and Athletics Building (“P” Building) was sent on Aug. 20.

Mesa College:

1. Carpet Replacement LRC Building: Final project turnover was held on Aug. 17.

2. Athletics Complex: Design-assist trade procurement strategy sessions with the Design Build Entity (DBE) were held on Aug. 17, followed by a design milestone celebration on Aug. 19. The 100% Schematic Design (SD) construction cost estimate reconciliation review was received on Aug. 21, along with continued coordination on shoring and structural design considerations.

3. Performing Arts Center (PAC) / Administration & Parking Structure: A design milestone celebration was held on Aug. 19. The Phase 1 DSA submittal for the parking structure was postponed pending completion of the shoring wall design. A new submittal date is to be determined.

4. Chilled & Hot Water Plant Piping Distribution: The facilities and operations teams met with MA Engineers on Aug. 20 for final feasibility study site verification to confirm that operational requirements have been met.

5. Pool Building Structural and Door Replacement: The project was completed on Aug. 21.

Miramar College:

1. Aquatics Center: The 90% Construction Documents (CD) were received from TBP Architecture on Aug. 18.

2. Aviation Instructional Center: The DBE visited the existing hangar to document electrical loads with the existing equipment on Aug. 19.

3. Early Education Center: The district reviewed the Increment 1 100% CD deliverable.

College of Continuing Education:

1. Educational Cultural Complex (ECC) Ceramics: A project scope review with user groups was held on Aug. 17.

2. Mid-City Expansion: A Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) review was held on Aug. 20 to review the proposed construction cost and confirm alignment with the project scope and budget.

3. West City Expansion: Focus group meetings with Culinary Arts and Student Support Services were held on Aug. 17, followed by a Clothing and Textiles focus group meeting on Aug. 21.

Coming Week Look-Ahead:

City College:

1. “A” Building Expansion: A Design Development (DD) workshop with the facilities group is scheduled for Aug. 24 and Aug. 27.

2. Hardscape Improvements: The final acceptance walk is scheduled for Aug. 28.

Mesa College:

1. Design Center Improvements: An in-person review of DSA backcheck comments is scheduled for Aug. 25, with DSA approval anticipated thereafter.

2. Performing Arts Center / Administration & Parking Structure: A DD meeting with the administration group is scheduled for Aug. 26.

3. Learning Resource Center (LRC) Building Emergency Generator Replacement: A recommendation to award the contract to the lowest responsive bidder will be presented to the Board of Trustees on Aug. 27.

4. Parking Garage Overhead Door Replacement (PS-100) Building: A recommendation to award the contract to the lowest responsive bidder will be presented to the Board of Trustees on Aug. 27.

Miramar College:

1. Early Education Center: The district and campus will review the Increment 2 100% DD deliverable during the week of Aug. 24. A coordination meeting will also be scheduled to determine whether SDG&E needs to revise the design of the existing gas utility line based on geotechnical recommendations.

2. Parking Garage Overhead Door Replacement (G1 and G4) Building: A recommendation to award the contract to the lowest responsive bidder will be presented to the Board of Trustees on Aug. 27.

3. Aviation Instructional Center: The DBE will continue development of the 50% CD deliverable and coordination with San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) for the new electrical service required for the building. A site walk with the DBE and SDG&E at the Montgomery Field hangar is scheduled for Aug. 27.

4. Performing Arts Center & English/Gallery Building: The DBE will continue development of the 50% DD deliverable. The campus will review the revised exterior rendering options and confirm the preferred design direction.

College of Continuing Education:

1. Mid-City Expansion: A building layout presentation to the President’s Executive Cabinet is scheduled for Aug. 25.

2. Harbor View Parking Garage Overhead Door Replacement: A recommendation to award the contract to the lowest responsive bidder will be presented to the Board of Trustees on Aug. 27.

Key Items of Interest:

Miramar College:

1. Jets Jump Start: The DBEs for the Aviation Instructional Center, Early Education Center, and Performing Arts/English/Gallery Building projects participated in Miramar College’s semester kickoff event on Aug. 19, which welcomes incoming students and connects them with campus resources and the college community. The teams engaged with students and shared information about current and upcoming Measure HH projects at Miramar College. (See related Instagram post)

Other District Locations:

1. Design Build Lessons Learned: A forum with all nine DBE teams was held on Aug. 21 to discuss lessons learned, including best practices, successful approaches, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.

2. Operations, Enterprise Services, and Facilities (OESF): The proposed fiscal year 2027 budget is due this week. Coordination with internal OESF audit team members will continue.

3. Simplifier: New updates were released on Aug. 18 to make project information easier to view and track. Improvements include clearer reporting, better tracking of project changes, and updates to scheduling and invoice information.
