Craig holds a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Cincinnati and a master's degree in botany from the University of Vermont-Burlington.  He is the Board’s first openly gay trustee. On June 30, 2020, Craig retired from the Biology faculty of Grossmont College after 26 years of service.  He served as the department’s co-chair from 2007 through his retirement.  The faculty of Grossmont College selected Craig as the Distinguished Faculty for 2020-21 recognizing his years of service as a faculty member, department chair and campus leader.  In May 2021, the Board of Trustees of the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District elevated Craig to the rank of Professor Emeritus. In addition to representing his District, Craig is focused on increasing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, addressing food and housing insecurity among SDCCD’s student, and advocating for the inclusion of SDCCD LGBTQ+ faculty, staff and students.
