What is Turnitin?

Turnitin is a widely recognized plagiarism detection tool used by educational institutions to ensure academic integrity. It operates by comparing submitted papers against an extensive database of academic content, including web pages, student papers, and scholarly articles. The tool generates a similarity report highlighting portions of the text that match existing sources, allowing instructors to identify potential instances of plagiarism. Turnitin's integration with learning management systems (LMS) like Canvas makes it an essential resource for maintaining rigorous academic standards in both traditional and online classrooms. Turnitin also includes an AI writing detection tool which has been available at the SDCCD since 2023.

Who Can use it?

Instructors and faculty can leverage Turnitin in their online classes to promote original work and provide formative feedback. By requiring students to submit their assignments through Turnitin, instructors can easily monitor the authenticity of student work and address issues of academic dishonesty promptly. The similarity reports generated by Turnitin help educators guide students in proper citation practices and reinforce the importance of original research. Additionally, Turnitin's grading tools enable instructors to annotate and comment on assignments directly within the platform, streamlining the assessment process and enhancing the overall learning experience for students.
